1 million trips through West Gate Tunnel since its opening

In just over four weeks since it opened on December 14, 1 million trips were recorded through Melbourne’s new West Gate Tunnel – however there have also been mixed reactions around the new tolled tunnels.

According to Transport Victoria, over 20 per cent of that number has been trucks.

The twin inbound Bundawanh and outbound Eureka tunnels provide an underground route for heavy vehicles through to the Port of Melbourne.

Transport Victoria says since the tunnel opened, it’s reduced truck traffic on local streets in areas like Footscray, Seddon and Yarraville.

“By directing trucks underground and into the tunnel, we’re seeing local streets freed up, safer neighbourhoods and a better experience for families, pedestrians and cyclists alike,” said Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne.

“As more people switch to the West Gate Tunnel, we’ll continue to see reduced pressure on surrounding roads and more predictable travel times for families and businesses.”

No-truck zones also came into effect as the West Gate Tunnel opened, leaving many truck drivers with no option but to use the new tolled option.

These no truck-zones apply to in inner west roads in Melbourne, including Francis Street and Somerville Road in Yarraville, Buckley Street and Moore Street in Footscray, Blackshaws Road in Altona North and Hudsons Road in Spotswood.

A new tolling point for heavy vehicles east of Millers Road on the M1, means heavy vehicles have to pay a toll (inbound and outbound) whether they use the new tunnel, the West Gate Bridge or the new ramps to/from Hyde Street.

Container Transport Alliance Australia (CTAA) has voiced concerns over the impacts of this on container transport operators who are now faced with higher costs.
