$10.4M Currawang Road upgrades to support heavy vehicle traffic

The Australian and New South Wales Governments are dedicating $10.4 million towards worth of road safety upgrades on Currawang Road.

Contributing $5.7 million and $4.7 million respectively, both governments are aiming to support upgrades from the intersection of Braidwood and Currawang Road to Browns Road.

The project’s safety upgrades include the replacement of two narrow causeways with new box culvert bridges, with 5.6 kilometres of the road’s surface to be reinforced and widened.

Additionally, the Saltpetre Creek Causeway will also be upgraded, a turning lane to Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s principal rock quarry will be installed and guardians and line marking upgrades will also be delivered.

According to NSW Minister for Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty, these safety upgrades will better equip the road for heavy vehicles.

“With more than 240 vehicle movements a day on Currawang Road, many of them heavy vehicles, this project will have long-term benefits for primary producers, delivering an asset that is less susceptible to road closures caused by floods and is safer for motorists,” she said.

The upgrades will also make the road more resilient to extreme weather events.

“Improving the safety of Currawang Road is something that the local community has long called for – particularly after damage from significant weather events, which is why I’m proud to be delivering $5.7 million towards these upgrades,” said Member for Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain.

“These upgrades will make Currawang Road safer for people travelling into Goulburn for work, school and community events – and will also ensure that this route keeps pace with increased heavy vehicle activity in the region.”

Goulburn Mulwaree Council is currently undertaking site preparation works, with main construction starting in January next year.

The project is expected to be completed in May 2027.

This project is one of many safety upgrades being delivered by the Federal and NSW Governments in partnership with Goulburn Muwaree, with over $2.1 million recently announced under the Road Safety Program for a package of improvements of Crookwell Road, along with Albert, Deccan, Clifford, Goldsmith, Verner and Faithful Streets.

In other news, Australia Post has relocated as part of its focus to become a ‘financially and environmentally sustainable business’.
