New bridge being built on Golden Highway to improve flood immunity

There will be changed traffic conditions to this section of the Golden Highway, with an upcoming two-weekend road closure as preparations begin for the construction of a new bridge.

Transport for NSW is upgrading the Golden Highway at Mudies Creek, Whittingham, to improve flood immunity.

The upgrades include building a new 28-metre-long bridge across Mudies Creek that will be five metres higher than the existing road level and designed to withstand a one-in-100-year flood event.

To carry out this work, the Golden Highway between the New England Highway and Range Road will be closed in both directions for two weekends from 7pm Friday June 27 until 4am Monday June 30, and again the following weekend from Friday July 4 to Monday July 7, weather permitting.

This will allow for the placement of temporary barriers and traffic control signage, along with carrying out earthworks, drainage installation, and adjustments to road line marking.

During the closures, light vehicle traffic will be detoured via Range Road, with an expected additional travel time of around 10 minutes. All heavy vehicles are to remain on the Golden Highway and will be accommodated through the worksite under traffic control. Local resident access will be maintained, and traffic control will help pedestrians and cyclists through the work area.

Vehicles travelling under a Permit and Notice must not travel off the approved route listed in the permit unless an updated permit is obtained from the NHVR.

Upon completion of these weekend works, traffic conditions will change for the next 18 months. Speed limits will be reduced to 60km/h to enable the safe construction of the new bridge and road.

“The first time was scary, but the second time is even scarier,” O’Connor said when accepting the award.

Speaking about the importance of women leading differently, O’Connor said it was important to drive change and inspire future generations to break traditional boundaries.

“I think it is important that women lead the industry, and I think we do things a lot differently,” she said.

“Standing up here for the next generation because back in the day growing up my mum didn’t work, my grandmother didn’t work either, and now we see other women in the industry, in leadership, and they can see women can do more than the things we are told we should be doing.”

Prime Creative Media COO, Christine Clancy, said the awards continue to play a vital role in recognising the achievements of women who are breaking down barriers and paving the way for future generations.

“These awards celebrate not only technical excellence but also the courage, resilience and leadership it takes to create lasting impact,” she said.

“Each winner is an inspiration and a powerful reminder of what’s possible when diversity is embraced.”

Daimler Truck Australia has issued a recall for its Fuso Fighter and Shogun models.

It affects 240 trucks manufactured in 2023.

The recall is due to a manufacturing defect. “The propeller shaft balance plate may not have been welded to the required specifications and could detach from the vehicle whilst driving,” the recall notice said, adding that if the propeller shaft balancing plate detaches from the vehicle whilst driving, it could increase the risk of an accident.

Owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact their nearest authorised Daimler Truck dealership to schedule an appointment to inspect the propeller shaft balancing plate.

If the welding defect is identified, the propeller shaft will be re-balanced. This work will be carried out free of charge as part of the recall.

Caught on dashcam: ‘That’s one hell of a close call’

A truck driver got the fright of her life last night, when a motorist came speeding along the wrong side of the road, just as she was about to change lanes.

The incident occurred on the on Pacific Highway at about 10.30pm last night, just north of New Italy, New South Wales, while Sonja White was travelling southbound.

Recalling the incident, she said, “When a car is heading northbound on the southbound side without head lights on – I nearly shit myself!

“It’s a scary feeling when you’re just about to change lanes because you think the truck in front of you is going to pull over and you do the right thing.

“Luckily I was watching the truck in front because we didn’t know about the car. I was just about to go onto the other side of the road to go around the truck. That’s when I noticed the 4×4 on my side of the road, going the wrong way.

She continued, “It literally scared the crap out of me. After he went past, he crashed into a bridge, only hurting himself.

“That’s one hell of a close call.”
