Alternative routes in place following truck explosion on Bruce Highway

With the Bruce Highway expected to remain closed in both directions at Bororen for some time, following an incident earlier this morning, details on alternative travel routes have been released.

Gladstone Regional Council, together with emergency services, the State Emergency Service (SES) and Transport and Main Roads (TMR) are working to redirect traffic from the Bruce Highway, near Gladstone.

A ‘Red Alert’ is in place for the Rockhampton, Gladstone and Central Highlands areas.

The following diversions are in place:

Light and heavy vehicle traffic traveling south from Rockhampton will be detoured at Calliope (Heavy vehicles will be directed through to Biloela)
Light vehicle traffic travelling north will be detoured at Mt Perry
Heavy vehicle traffic traveling north will be detoured at Childers
Blackmans Gap Road will be open to local traffic only

Variable message boards will be in place to direct traffic on affected roads.

An exclusion zone remains in place. Image: Queensland Ambulance Service

The incident occurred when a ute and B-double carrying ammonium nitrate collided at around 5.15am this morning, causing an explosion.

A 2.5-kilometre exclusion zone remains in place, with nearby homes evacuated.

The explosion has also caused significant damage to the Bruce Highway and has also affected the North Coast rail line.

Gladstone Regional Council is currently preparing the Miriam Vale Community Centre as a place of refuge, if required, for those who have had to evacuate.
