Cyclone alert for truckies as Zelia nears WA coast

Western Australia’s peak trucking body has issued a warning to operators and truckies as Tropical Cyclone Zelia closes in on the Pilbara coast.

In a note to its members, the Western Roads Federation (WRF) said the severe storm poses a significant risk of flood disruption to Great Northern Highway and NW Coastal Highway, with risk of flash flooding.

Zelia is forecast to reach category five strength later today as it continues to track slowly towards the Pilbara and bring up to 500mm of rain and winds gusting up to 250km/h.

“WRF have been involved in several working groups over the last week as part of the state’s emergency response,” said WRF CEO Cam Dumesny.

“WRF has been in preparatory consultation with both SA and NT about allowing 53.5m alternative route should it be needed to access the Kimberley.”

Zelia is expected to make landfall as a category three system on Thursday or Friday.

Meanwhile, Dumesny urged all industry likely to be impacted to keep up to date at Emergency WA and on the Main Roads Travel Map.
