Delays expected on West Gate Freeway as works ramp up

From now until March 8, major surfacing works are taking place on the West Gate Freeway in Melbourne, between Millers Road and the West Gate Bridge.

The West Gate Freeway is now reduced from four to three lanes – until February 17 in the outbound direction, and until March 8 in the citybound direction.

This is to enable crews to set up new traffic arrangements, progress works and pack up traffic arrangements.

The West Gate Freeway outbound exit ramps to Millers Road and Grieve Parade are now closed 24/7, with drivers who usually exit at these points advised to exit early at Williamstown Road instead.

The Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp is also closed until April, with a detour via Melbourne Road, Blackshaws Road, Millers Road and West Gate Freeway.

From 5am, Saturday Feb 15 to 5am, Saturday March 8, Williamstown Road citybound exit ramp, Millers Road citybound entry ramp, and Grieve Parade citybound entry ramp will also be closed 24/7/

For the Williamstown Road closure, drivers are advised to exit early at Millers Road.

For the Millers Road and Grieve Parade closures, use Williamstown Road to enter the Freeway.

Delays of up to 30 minutes are expected during the works, which will deliver permanent road barriers, additional signage, smoother roads and new inbound express lanes.

The West Gate Tunnel Project is now in its final stages of construction before it opens by the end of this year.

When the project is complete, drivers will be able to travel to and from the west to the city along the West Gate Freeway via two new tunnels under Yarraville, with new city connections to Footscray Road in Docklands, Dynon Road in West Melbourne or CityLink.

The upgraded M80 interchange, new Hyde Street and MacKenzie Road ramps will also cater for larger trucks.

The Victorian government says it will allow a “more efficient movement of freight”, as well as taking up to 9000 trucks off local roads in Melbourne’s inner west.
