Driver killed in two-truck crash on Port Wakefield Highway

A section of Port Wakefield Highway near Prime Road in Inkerman, South Australia, was still closed late today after a tragic two-truck crash this morning.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at 6.50am and found the trucks had burst into flames upon impact. It took firefighters several hours to extinguish the blaze.

The driver of one truck, a 77-year-old man from Port Augusta, sadly died at the scene.

The second driver and his passenger, a 57-year-old man from Marleston and a 39-year-old man from Elizabeth Downs, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Major Crash Investigators are attending.

“There was intense fog this morning when I came through about half an hour prior to this accident occurring and the fog was that thick you wouldn’t be able to see 20 metres in front of you,” truckie Wayne Meyers told ABC morning radio.

“It looks horrible – it’s a horrible, horrible scene … (as a truck driver) it’s our worst nightmare.”

Traffic on southbound lanes remain blocked.

SA Police said oversized vehicles will need to hold at Port Wakefield or Dublin.

An alternative for southbound traffic from Port Wakefield is via Balaklava, then Mallala and out onto Port Wakefield Highway. Northbound lanes remain open with speed restrictions in place.

These restrictions are expected to remain in place for some time, said police.

Meanwhile, Queensland Police are investigating a fatal truck crash at Witheren early yesterday.

Initial investigations indicate that around 9.30am, a tipper was travelling along Beechmont Road, near Rhoades Road, when it left the road and went down an embankment.

The driver and single occupant of the vehicle, a 62-yer-old Hillcrest man, was declared deceased at the scene.

The Forensic Crash Unit is appealing to anyone who may have relevant information or CCTV/dashcam vision to come forward.
