There have been many sightings of camels near the shoulder of the Eyre Highway, particularly near the town of Cocklebiddy in Western Australia.
Truck driver Gail Ritchie snapped this photo about 14km east of Cocklebiddy.
“Take extra care on this route, especially at night. Camels have been sighted standing on the shoulders of the highway, they pose a significant safety risk and can cause significant damage to your vehicle if struck,” the regulator said.
Since approximately 10,000-20,000 camels were introduced into Australia in between 1840 and 1907, numbers have exploded.
According to current estimates there are now around 1 million wild camels.
The Northern Territory Government says feral camels are found in over 37 per cent of mainland Australia, particularly in Central Australia and the Victoria River District regions.
Australia is widely believed to have the largest population of feral camels in the world.
