Early work ramps up on Queensland’s Inland Freight Route

Truckies have been advised of further closures to the flood-prone Dawson River bridge on the Carnarvon Highway from later this month as work on Queensland’s Inland Freight Route ramps up.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads said the bridge will be closed between 6am and 6pm on the following dates, weather permittting:

July 24
July 26
July 29
August 7

The Queensland government is spending $19.7 million to widen the bridge, reconstruct and realign bridge approaches and install new bridge rails and guardrails.

Eligible vehicles can access the alternate route, via Leichhardt Highway (pictured below), provided a copy of the approved variation letter is used in conjunction with a current permit.

Operators without a current permit are required to apply via the NHVR Portal for the alternative route.

All vehicle combinations with a ground contact width and/or loaded width greater than 3m are not permitted to travel through the site.

For more information on access, operators can call (07) 4622 9511 or email southwest.office@tmr.qld.gov.au.

Construction started on the new bridge on October 16, 2023 and is expected to be completed by late September 2024, weather and conditions permitting.
