Federal Member for Curtin, Kate Chaney, supports a repeal of the live sheep ban.
Keep the Sheep spokesman, Ben Sutherland, attributed it to the pressure placed on her through the campaign and the convoy which travelled through her electorate last month.
“It’s good that she has finally answered us and we’re glad to see another MP arrive at the commonsense position of saving 3,000 jobs in rural WA,” he said.
Chaney told media on 30 March: “If there was legislation to repeal it, I would vote to repeal the ban.”
Sutherland said that the campaign was pleased to obtain this election commitment.
“All we were asking for was a simple answer and now Ms Chaney has answered on the public record.
“These commitments don’t happen by accident.
“It’s obvious Ms Chaney was fearful of losing votes if she didn’t support WA’s farmers, shearers and truckies.”
Last year, Chaney heard from constituents and other Western Australians about the real impact the sheep ban would have on them, their livelihoods, mental health, families and communities.
“If the industry were to continue, I would want to see strong oversight and better measures of sheep welfare than just mortality,” she said.
“The industry has been in decline in recent years, and this trend may continue anyway.”
