Eyre Highway reopens with warning to take ‘extreme caution’

The Eyre Highway has reopened between Eucla and Yalata, with Main Roads Western Australia urging drivers to “exercise extreme caution”.

The highway was closed near the WA/SA border at around 7.30am yesterday after a truck carrying insecticides caught fire, filling the air with toxic fumes.

WA Police and SA Police created an exclusion zone to protect people from the dangerous smoke, with several road trains backed up at the border.

The highway was expected to be closed until at least midday today, however it reopened last night under traffic control.

SA Country Fire Service warned that the highway may be closed again at short notice.

“Follow the directions of emergency service personnel and signage,” they said.

“For updates visit the CFS website or phone the Information Hotline on 1800 362 361.”
