Far North Queensland resident shares poem to thank truckies

Bowen lawyer Barbara Mendelsohn has always been in awe of the work that truckies do.

So, after many of her truck driver friends were holed up in the small Far North Queensland communities last month, waiting for the flood waters to recede, she decided to put pen to paper and write truckies a thank you poem.

We think you’ll agree that the result below she’s titled Ode To Truckies is an absolute cracker.

Ode To Truckies

By Barbara Mendelsohn

So the trucks left the north to travel down south,

Full of avocados and bananas to whet the mouth.

Specialities of the Tropics, destined for the markets of the metropolics

But alas the monsoon weather of the north took hold,

As it rained and rained, the trucks got stuck amongst the gold.

They could not go up, nor could they go down,

So they sat together as the river waters circled around.

For days and nights – the hours were long, and the static convoys just got longer and stronger.

The waters in the rivers continued to rise, and the bridge at Ollera gave us all a surprise.

The convoys continued to grow and grow, and for each driver it was a personal blow.

Away from home – and in some cases even stuck without a phone.

But help arrived with the helicopters full of food, pizza and beer, and all that was good,

After a week the rain decided to stop, it meant that many on the road had waited quite a lot.

Eventually Ollera was rebuilt, and Seymour decided to quit,

And to much relief the convoys were on the go, and everyone, including the boys, were ecstatic to flow.

The trucks got through and the shops were supplied, the sight of the moving convoys was met with relief and a sigh,

Many thanks to the truckies was relayed on social media,

Thanking them for their patience, grit and greater collegia.

We all must remember, each day and nights, that when we go to purchase our personal delights ….

That if there is something that you want and you bought it,

There is the old saying “if you got it, then a truck brought it”

A BIG thank you to all who have struggled and worked hard to maintain, our ever growing, and vital, supply chain!
