Fleet of C509 quad road trains hit the road in Weipa

A fleet of Kenworth C509 quad road trains, capable of hauling payloads of up to 330-tonne, has been put to work in Weipa, following CSI’s expansion from WA and into Queensland.

CSI Mining Services (CSI) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mineral Resources (MinRes).

The fleet of C509s was transported by sea to their new home, to service Rio Tinto’s Weipa operations, transporting bauxite ore.

As MinRes chief executive mining services Mike Grey explained, “CSI has worked closely with Rio Tinto to transport the Kenworth C509 quad road trains from Western Australia to Queensland, with them being transported via a roll-on, roll-off vessel to Weipa and then driven 30km to the Andoom mine site.

“This includes transporting the road trains across the single-lane, narrow Weipa Mission Bridge, requiring a high level of planning, coordination and teamwork with Rio Tinto.

“This marks an exciting time of growth for CSI and we are proud to build on our longstanding relationship with Rio Tinto.”

This is the CSI’s first project in Queensland, along with being the first time operating at a bauxite mine site and the first time utilising multiple quad road trains.

The company is operating the quad road trains from the Andoom mine site at Weipa via two haul routes.

MC drivers have been recruited locally from Weipa, Cairns and surrounding areas, with drivers offered permanent jobs to service the contract.
