A busy section of the Western Highway, used to transport thousands of tonnes of a grain each year, is now undergoing repairs and strengthening works as part of Victoria’s record $964 million road maintenance blitz.
Crews have begun rehabilitation works on a one-kilometre stretch of the Western Highway in Lawloit between Kaniva and Nhill.
This section sees a high number of trucks transporting grain from farms across the region to storage facilities at Nhill each year – supporting Victoria’s $4.4 billion grain industry.
As a major link between South Australia and western Victoria, the highway also helps to keep hundreds of thousands of drivers and millions of tonnes of freight on the move between Melbourne and Adelaide.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said, “We’re rebuilding this stretch of the Western Highway to ensure the road is more resilient to handle larger, heavier trucks that are getting goods to market – supporting the farmers, freight operators, and families who rely on it every single day.”
Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora added, “Whether it’s getting grain to storage or simply driving to work, these major repairs on the Western Highway will make life easier for everyone in our community.”
The works to rebuild and strengthen the road are expected to take around two months to complete, weather permitting.
As part of the Victorian Government’s road maintenance blitz, major repairs are also currently underway in Beaufort and Trawalla on the Western Highway.
