Jenny Aitchison is the new Minister for Roads in NSW after the state government announced its new Cabinet line up today.
The reshuffle was triggered by Jo Haylen stepping down from the position earlier last month following revelations about her use of a taxpayer-funded ministerial car for a winery lunch on the long Australia Day weekend.
John Graham, who had been temporarily in charge of the portfolio, will continue to take carriage of the government’s response to the toll review given the government is mid-negotiation with toll companies about reforming the system.
Aitchison will also continue as Minister for Regional Transport with her old regional roads responsibilities incorporated into her new role.
Peak body Road Freight NSW (RFNSW) welcomed the appointment of Aitchison into the top job.
CEO Simon O’Hara said Aitchison has a ‘deep understanding’ of the heavy vehicle industry.
“On behalf on RFNSW and our members, we congratulate the minister on her elevation to the critical NSW Roads portfolio,” O’Hara said.
“From our perspective, this an excellent, common-sense appointment by the Premier, allowing the minister to transition from her previous role as the Minister for Regional Roads and Transport into her new portfolio.
“She clearly understands how the heavy vehicle industry operates and the challenges drivers and business owners face on a daily basis – she brings a great deal of knowledge and ‘hands on’ experience to the role.”
John Graham, meanwhile, will remain the Special Minister of State, the Minister for the Arts, the Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy and will permanently take on the role of Minister for Transport
