Long delays ahead for truckies planning to use Princes Motorway at Mount Ousley

Guard rail repair work on the M1 Princes Motorway just south of the heavy vehicle parking area at Mount Ousley, NSW, will mean lengthy detours, or no travel at all, for truckies later this month.

On Sunday, May 19 and Sunday, May 26, Mount Ousley Road between Bulli Tops and Memorial Drive, and Picton Road between the M1 Princes Motorway and Almond Street at Wilton, will be closed at night in both directions, weather permitting.

On Monday, May 20, and Tuesday, May 21 and again on Monday, May 27 and Tuesday, May 28, Mount Ousley Road southbound and Picton Road eastbound will be closed at night, weather permitting.

Detours will be in place during the closures from 8pm until 4am.

Picton Road eastbound will be closed between 7.30pm and 4am.

Bulli Pass will be open during this work.

Truckies travelling between Wollongong and Bulli Tops can detour via Memorial Drive and Bulli Pass and should allow up to 15 minutes additional travel time.

Truckies travelling between Wollongong and the Hume Motorway can detour via Memorial Drive, Bulli Pass and Appin Road, and should allow up to 40 minutes additional travel time. Light vehicles can also detour via Wilton Road (Broughton Pass).

Truckies travelling south on the Hume Motorway can detour via the Illawarra Highway (Macquarie Pass).
But the detour is not suitable for any OSOM vehicle, or any vehicle exceeding 19 metres in length and/or 50 tonne.
Operators of these vehicles are advised to delay their journey as there is no detour option available. If arriving onsite, OSOM vehicles will be directed to park-up until the road reopens.

Transport for NSW Regional Director South, Cassandra Ffrench, said crews will make use of planned general maintenance closures from Sunday, May 19 to minimise impacts to road users.

“This repair work is needed to ensure the guard rail is in optimal condition for the safety of motorists,” Ffrench said.

“We understand any closure in this area has flow on effects, so teams have worked to develop the best approach that minimises impacts to motorists as much as possible without compromising safety.”

Ffrench said routine maintenance, and work to inform the detailed design for the Mount Ousley interchange project, will be carried out simultaneously to make the most of the closures.

“We don’t want to close roads longer than is necessary, so multiple crews will work concurrently to complete the guardrail repairs and maintenance work including vegetation removal, drain clearing and line marking,” Ffrench said.

“Survey work, vegetation removal and pavement and geotechnical investigations will also be carried out to inform the Mount Ousley interchange project’s detailed design.”

The planned general maintenance closure on Sunday 5 May was postponed due to weather and will now take place on Sunday 26 May, weather permitting.
