North East Link Project: VTA State Conference 2023

An update for the North East Link Project was showcased with drone footage at the Victorian Transport Association (VTA) State Conference 2023.

The North East Link Project is the biggest investment in Melbourne’s north-east, and involves the construction of two three-lane, 6.5km-long tunnels to Watsonia.

AT VTA State Conference 2023, North and East Link Project Delivery Director, Michael Caink, said the project was progressing according to plan.

“We’re really coming along here today to tell you about the project benefits for the industry long term, but also the opportunities that we see for the industry in the next few years in terms of procurement of new vehicles that can service the project and also train our staff,” he said.

“We know that this road will prevent a lot of potential accidents and improve efficiency particularly here in industry.

“We’ve considered all the bigger vehicles and all the different things, and we’ve taken a lot of lessons learned from other projects recently delivered not only in Melbourne but also in southern New South Wales.”

According to Caink, construction of the North East Link will take 15,000 trucks off the road every day, and in the process, will create 10,000 jobs for Victoria.

“There’s a whole lot of extra benefits of these putting the trade trucks and freight underneath the ground moving safely and predictably through the traffic network,” he said.

“It gives us a lot of opportunities to improve traffic around the surrounding area throughout Melbourne and created many of the surrounding communities.”
