Princes Freeway closure causes Melbourne peak hour chaos

Melbourne-bound lanes of the Princes Freeway were closed to traffic at Werribee this morning, with authorities investigating whether a damaged road surface could be to blame.

All lanes between the Princes Highway, Werribee and Duncans Road remained closed for hours, before one lane was reopened at about 9am this morning.

This followed a collision and truck rollover.

Images circulated online show a damaged expansion joint on the road, with protruding metal spikes, which may have contributed to the incident that occurred early this morning.

According to reports, around 10 vehicles were damaged in the incident.

Transport Victoria shared this update at 9am, “One Melbourne-bound lane has been re-opened on the Princes Freeway, Werribee following a truck rollover this morning.

“Two lanes remain closed as crews continue to investigate the cause of the incident and work to safely re-open all lanes.

“There are delays exceeding two hours on the freeway and on surrounding roads through Werribee and Wyndham Vale. It will take some time for delays to ease.”

Those travelling between Geelong and Melbourne are advised to detour via Bacchus Marsh and the Western Freeway.

“Please be patient and mindful of local traffic, and obey all local speed limits if travelling through Werribee,” Transport Victoria added.

“All lanes will re-open when investigations and repairs are complete and it is safe to do so.”
