The results of a joint bridge strike operation between the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR), Queensland Rail and the Queensland Police Service (QPS) have been released.
The enforcement and education blitz was held in December, with the focus being on bridge strike hotspots in South East Queensland. This follows 386 strikes to rail bridges and protection beams in a 12-month period.
However during the operation, it seems the vast majority of heavy vehicle drivers were found to be doing the right thing.
“During Operation Bridge Strike, the NHVR conducted ten intercepts and provided education to each driver on the important of adhering to bridge and height limits,” an NHVR spokesperson told Big Rigs.
“Fortunately, no height-related incidents were detected during the operation. Two defect notices regarding minor defects were issued.”
However the NHVR urged truck drivers to ensure they know their heights and remain vigilant. “Bridge strikes can be potentially deadly events and pose significant risk to both the heavy vehicle driver and other motorists, as well as causing costly damage to important public infrastructure and affecting rail customers,” the NHVR spokesperson said.
“The NHVR will continue to work closely with our jurisdictional partners in a bid to reduce the rate of bridge strike incidents.”
