The Bruce Highway is currently closed to all traffic between Cardwell and Ingham, due to flooding at Seymour River.
With North Queensland once again hit by heavy rain, there are numerous road closures in place.
Over 200mm of rain drenched parts of North Queensland overnight, with severe weather warnings in place for areas between Cairns and just south of Townsville.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) says heavy rainfall will continue in parts of northeast Queensland throughout this morning.
“Convergence between a very humid northeasterly flow from the Coral Sea and a southeasterly wind surge pushing up the central Queensland coast has strengthened overnight and will remain in place this morning. This will lead to a continuation of heavy showers and a few thunderstorms about the coast and ranges of the Herbert and Lower Burdekin district,” the BOM said.
“The risk of heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding is expected to continue during this morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals of 120 to 160mm are likely, with isolated totals to 240mm possible.”
Queensland Police issued an alert at around 6am this morning advising that various roads in and around Townsville have been closed due to flooding including Railway Avenue between Boundary Street and Putt Street, Bayswater Road and Banfield Drive, Townsend Street, Hugh Street between Bayswater Road and Woolcock Street, Pilkington Street between Bayswater Road and Woolcock Street in Garbutt and Civil Road.
The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) is on high alert, with rain expected to increase as the week continues.
“At this point we need residents to stay calm, listen to advice and remain vigilant. Low-lying and flood prone areas across Townsville may start to experience localised flooding as rainfall levels increase,” TLDMG Chair Andrew Robinson said.
“Intense rainfall can cause localised flash flooding, potholes, and drive wildlife into suburban areas, so be careful when driving and walking in and around affected areas. Remember, if it’s flooded, forget it – never drive through floodwaters.”
BOM says conditions should begin to ease by this afternoon as the southeasterly wind surge weakens.
