Third generation family business acquired as owners prepare for retirement

A family owned and operated transport business, now in its third generation, will begin its next chapter under new ownership.

Based in Melbourne, Coynes Freight Management has been acquired by wharf transport operator Butler Freight Services (BFS Extra), as the family prepares for retirement.

Coynes was established in 1950 by Neville Coyne and his father Bob Coyne.

Starting out as a newspaper delivery business, it has since grown into a leading independent transport company specialising in wharf container cartage.

Coynes operates a modern fleet of over 70 vehicles – including Super B combinations, B-doubles, prime movers, and side-loaders.

Its services include container cartage, warehousing, unpacking/packing, and goods distribution.

BFS Extra acquired Coynes for an undisclosed sum.

Despite the change in ownership, the business will continue to operate under the Coynes Freight Management brand, with all current Coyne staff members to remain employed within the business.

BFS Extra is a privately owned Australian company with deep roots in Melbourne’s wharf transport industry.

In February 2017, BFS Extra expanded its operations by acquiring Extra Transport, making it one of the largest wharf transport operators in Australia.

Butler’s operational facilities include a highly efficient West Melbourne wharf facility, located just 300 metres from the wharf, handling over 110,000 TEU per annum.

It operates a diverse fleet of approximately 140 prime movers daily, comprising Super B-doubles, B-doubles, side-loaders, retractable skels, tautliners, and various general trailer combinations.

Coynes Freight Services has been contacted for comment.
