TraX: Advanced monitoring solution for safer roads

SKF, a renowned technology provider for industries worldwide, has launched its latest product, the TraX Wheel End Monitor.

This state-of-the-art system, developed based on customer feedback, addresses the need for a more advanced, comprehensive wheel end monitor. With its enhanced safety features, the TraX Wheel End Monitor acts as a reliable safeguard, offering an extra layer of assurance on the road.

SKF Automotive Product Manager, Chris Hayes, and Business Manager Vehicle Service, Andy Hicks, bring over 35 years of combined experience. They’ve witnessed the serious consequences of neglecting wheel end maintenance.

They explain that high-risk scenarios, especially involving petrol tankers, could have resulted in dangerous outcomes if not for effective wheel end monitoring through SKF solutions.

The TraX Wheel End Monitor aims to enhance road safety by providing real-time information on wheel bearing vibration and temperature, helping users avoid high-risk situations. Originally designed to address vibration issues in unitised bearings, the system was further developed based on customer input.

“For example, we incorporated temperature monitoring into this new version, while keeping it user-friendly,” Hayes said.

“The product bolts between two wheel studs and is set with a magnet, and it starts monitoring the bearings for possible faults as soon as the vehicle is in motion.”

Hicks adds that TraX reduces ownership costs as it eliminates the need for preventative wheel bearing replacements.

“This makes it the most economical retrofittable solution for wheel end monitoring,” he said.

“The TraX Wheel End Monitor is unique compared to other products on the market.

“As far as we’re aware, we’re the only ones offering bearing monitoring. Others provide sensors for tyre pressure and temperature, but our solution monitors vibration and temperature at the wheel end, and it can be reset once potential issues have been addressed.”

SKF’s unique offering continues to evolve, with future developments including Bluetooth and telematics options based on customer demand. The Bluetooth version is expected to launch early next year, while the full telematics option depends on Australian customer interest.

Both managers emphasise that as the TraX Wheel End Monitor evolves, its purpose remains clear – listening to customer feedback to develop solutions that benefit users in the best way possible.

“We’re excited to have stock available in Australia and to engage directly with customers about the TraX Wheel End Monitor,” Hayes said.

“Customer feedback is core to our research and development, and we’re continually striving to improve.”
