Trial of keeping inspection stations open 24/7 is ‘working well’

The NHVR has said it is “encouraged” by feedback it has received from drivers during the first few months of a trial in which two inspection stations have been made available to truckies outside of usual operating hours.

Since April this year, two NSW sites (Daroobalgie HVSS on the Newell Highway and Halfway Creek located on the Pacific Highway) have been open to truck drivers who wish to check their vehicle weight even when there is no staff present.

NHVR Director of Operations Central Region Brett Patterson told Big Rigs that drivers have said the program has been “working well”.

“The two NSW sites (Daroobalgie HVSS on the Newell Highway and Halfway Creek located on the Pacific Highway) are available when not in use by our Safety and Compliance officers, with industry feedback resulting in additional signage being installed at the Daroobalgie HVSS site to advise drivers when the site is available for a check weigh,” he said.

“Further feedback has indicated several drivers are verifying their vehicles’ on-board mass equipment readings with the weighbridge mass displayed, ensuring the onboard devices are providing a level of accuracy.”

He added that while it is “pleasing” to see a steady increase in heavy vehicles undertaking a check weigh, the NHVR also wants the industry to “continue to do the right thing and ensure their vehicle is safe and compliant with mass limits before each journey commences”.

The NHVR will continue to monitor this check weigh initiative.

Further information on heavy vehicle mass limits can be found at  General mass and dimension limits.
