Truckie shares dash cam clip of heart-stopping near miss

An Adelaide based truck driver has shared footage of a frightening near-miss that occurred on a notorious trouble spot in Western Australia, which many say needs urgent attention.

Joel Warren was travelling past the intersection of Melville Mandurah Highway and Beach Street in Kwinana, when his quick-thinking actions helped avoid a serious collision.

“I didn’t think much of it at the time, just another day in the office. But the more I watch it back, the closer it feels. It was just all luck and a split decision to avoid the truck,” Joel told Big Rigs.

“I was empty, luckily. I had a single trailer with a dolly behind that. I usually have three trailers behind the truck, but I had to split to load.”

Joel says he hadn’t realised just how many close calls happen at that particular spot. “I later found out it’s quite a notorious intersection for near misses due to the blind corner and the greenery in the median strip restricting the view.”

As he recalled what happened, Joel explained, “The left side gap was closing, and I had traffic on my left side, just out of view of the camera.

“So I went to the right, and luckily, I was successful in avoiding all obstacles in the way.”

Though it was a very close call, Joel says he has no hard feelings towards the driver who pulled out in front him.

“All the people calling for the driver to have his license revoked and slamming him need to calm down.

“We are all guilty of making mistakes on the road, and if you say you’ve never made a mistake, you’ve got to be kidding yourself.

“Although this one could have been disastrous, we’ve all got to go home to our families that day. I have no hatred towards the other driver.”

As Joel continued: “He was in a tough spot to navigate and had a lot of weight to pull across that intersection. It was just unlucky for him that I was on approach behind the trees out of sight.

“Sure, he could have aborted his take-off and tried again, but they’re called mistakes for a reason, and in this instance, there was no harm done besides some elevated heart rates.”
