Transport and Main Roads Queensland has warned truckies to expect delays of up to 15 minutes while travelling through Cunninghams Gap this week.
TMR told Big Rigs that the delays are due to intermittent single-lane closures to facilitate the Cunninghams Gap Reconstruction Project.
The current work hours for the project are 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).
These work schedules may change due to weather and/or site conditions.
A spokesperson for TMR Queensland said: “As the Cunningham Highway serves as a significant link for freight, it is important to note delays at Cunninghams Gap may vary when travelling through the project site (between Tregony and Mount Edwards).
“This may be caused by the number of oversize and/or overmass (OSOM) vehicles travelling through site and the time of travel.”
A reduced speed limit of 40km/hr is in place to enable crews to ensure that work areas along the road alignment are clear of all hazards and obstructions prior to vehicles travelling through the site.
This is for “for the safety of all road users and construction crews at Cunninghams Gap”.
The spokesperson said that the “current conditions of operations” will continue to January 13, 2025 for heavy vehicles on the Cunningham Highway travelling through the project site at Cunninghams Gap.
They added: “Where possible the project supports heavy vehicle operators travelling through the project site at Cunninghams Gap, and encourages; operators to check the Conditions of Operations Database for the latest information before starting their journey, operators to email traffic.cunninghamsgap@mcilwain.com to notify the project team ahead of time, and operators to call-up, before approaching the site by using UHF channel 40 if assistance is required travelling through the project site, operators to subscribe via email to receive TMR heavy vehicle notifications.”
The Cunninghams Gap Reconstruction Project aims to repair a section of the Cunningham Highway at Cunninghams Gap, which was extensively damaged by bushfires in 2019.
The bushfires caused slope damage resulting in rock and debris falling onto the highway and increased the likelihood of rock falls, posing a danger to road users.
The highway serves a significant role in transporting people and freight to and from Brisbane and the Port of Brisbane from the west.
The recovery works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
