More trucks are expected to head north and southbound between Port Hedland to Broome tomorrow (February 21) with essential goods under escort, advises the Western Roads Federation (WRF).
In a note to members today, the WRF said the WA Main Roads office in South Hedland was receiving permits for trucks with essential goods only wishing to travel under escort.
But the offfice was not receiving permits after 4pm due to limited staff capacity, the WRF warned.
Trucks returning southbound also had to apply for permits.
“Main Roads is anticipating the Great Northern Highway could be open to all traffic (daylight only 6am-6pm) by Saturday or Sunday, depending on repair crews,” the WRF said.
“When the road reopens (daylight only) there will still be sections under traffic management.
“Please note that shoulders in sections are very soft. No decision on OSOM permits.”

According to other reports, Main Roads has also been issuing permits to allow 53-metre road trains to make the 6260km journey via South Australia and the Northern Territory, entering the Kimberley from the north.
It said another convoy of trucks was also to be escorted from Port Hedland to Broome today.
