Upcoming Monaro Highway closure as new bridge girders lifted into place

Construction of a new flyover and interchange at the Monaro Highway and Lanyon Drive intersection is now underway, with upcoming closures this weekend.

The Monaro Highway is being upgraded to help improve safety, freight efficiency and provide faster and smoother travel for Tuggeranong, the Woden Valley and southern NSW.

The Monaro Highway will include:

A new southbound flyover on the Monaro Highway over Lanyon Drive (including 3-metre-wide sealed shoulders).
The highway road pavement upgraded from David Warren Road, near the Alexander Maconochie Centre, through to Sheppard Street in Hume (including 3-metre-wide sealed shoulders).
A new widened bridge on the northbound carriageway over Dog Trap Creek/Woden Creek just north of Lanyon Drive. This includes an improved northbound merge from Lanyon Drive onto the Monaro Highway.
The new bridge structure will have Indigenous artwork applied to some of the external elements.

As part of the project, 40 bridge girders will need to be lifted on to the piers to form part of the bridge structure. So far, 20 bridge girders are in place on the northern side of the project.

To allow for construction to progress on the project, Lanyon Drive between the northbound and southbound carriageways of Monaro Highway will be closed from 7pm, Friday October 17 to 5am, Monday October 20, 2025.

To minimise traffic impacts, the closures will commence after the Friday afternoon peak period, and the road will be reopened prior to the Monday morning peak.

During the closure, there will be detours through the Hume industrial area along Sheppard Street to access Monaro Highway, with forecast impacts of approximately five minutes.

An alternative route for road users travelling from Jerrabomberra to north Canberra is to turn right onto Lanyon Drive at Tompsitt Drive and then use Canberra Avenue.

Infrastructure Canberra says users are reminded to follow all signage and directions from traffic controllers, and to be aware that reduced speed limits apply throughout the project site.

Further weekend closures will be required for bridge construction and works including a new stormwater line and pavements near the northbound carriageway intersection. Dates of these works will be communicated over the coming months.

Construction of the flyover and interchange is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

The Monaro Highway upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and ACT Governments through the Infrastructure Investment Program.
