Update on detours in place as Bruce Highway remains closed

The Department of Transport and Main Roads Queensland has issued an update to truckies using detours while the Bruce Highway is closed at Bororen, south of Gladstone.

Some long vehicles are having difficulty navigating the rail overpass in Monto, so an alternative route is available for vehicles restricted in their ability to turn within the Monto township.

The alternative route available for long heavy vehicles to avoid the rail overpass is:

in Monto township – use Flinders Street at Kennedy Street, Mill Road, Lister Street and Burnett Highway

Monto to Biloela via Burnett Highway

Biloela to Calliope via Dawson Highway.

In response to the current closure of the Bruce Highway and diversions in place, PBS A-double operators using the current heavy vehicle detour off the Bruce Highway are requested to load to a maximum GCM of 79 tonnes.

There is also a total exclusion zone in place from Tannum Sands Road to Bororen.

Local traffic is permitted within the Bruce Highway closure, however, NO traffic is permitted in the exclusion zone.

Variable message boards will be in place to direct traffic on affected roads.

“At this stage it is expected there will be significant delays and we appreciate the patience of motorists during this time,” said TMR.

“Motorists are reminded to observe all warning signs, speed restrictions, detours and traffic control directions in place.”

Gladstone Regional Council has reminded residents in the area that they are considered “local traffic” and permitted to use Blackmans Gap Road.

Drivers may be requested to show a licence to prove place of residence.

Essential travel only is strongly encouraged on Blackmans Gap Road and Gladstone Monto Road at the moment (i.e. work or medical) as the routes are experiencing high volumes of traffic while the highway is detoured.

Gladstone Regional Council will continue to provide updates regarding the condition and access of Blackmans Gap Road.

Earlier today, TMR Queensland informed Big Rigs that it is aiming to reopen at least one lane of the Bruce Highway under traffic control by 11.55pm tomorrow night (Tuesday September 3).

“Depending on damage assessment and the completion of remediation work, two lanes of access may be possible,” a spokesperson said.

“For the safety of all road users, please follow official detour routes and do not use local road networks.

“Motorists are reminded to observe all warning signs, speed restrictions, detours and traffic control directions in place.

“Please remember to be patient and respectful to our roadworkers and traffic controllers on site – they are working hard to get the Bruce Highway open as quickly and as safely as possible, and to ensure all road users have safe access through established diversions.”
