Truckies are being promised improved facilities with more than $1 million of upgrades at the Bundjalung rest area adjacent to the Pacific Motorway, north of Maclean, NSW.
They include a toilet block with four toilets – including a disabled toilet – three picnic shelters, footpaths and “associated infrastructure”.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson told Big Rigs that the new facilities were designed to “meet the needs of truck drivers”, but also said they were not exclusively for their use.
The entrance to the rest area has existing facilities suitable for the general motoring public, with the new facility for trucks about 100 metres to the north,” the spokesperson said.
“While the general public will not be excluded from the truckies’ facilities, the new facilities have been located closer to heavy vehicle parking areas.”
The new facility is in a section of the old Pacific Highway adjacent to the new dual-divided Pacific Motorway south of Tabbimoble.
“Parking for heavy vehicles is available close to the new facilities and along the full one-kilometre length of the now-diverted highway. It can accommodate dozens of trucks.”
The project was funded through the NSW Government’s Heavy Vehicle Rest Stops Improvement Program.

“These upgraded facilities will encourage them to do just that and is all part of the NSW Government measures to make our roads safer,” the spokesperson said.
“Truckies will have easy access back to the highway so we believe it will be very popular.”
