Former WA driver Alan Mischefski moved to Queensland in 2000 and has great experience in numerous states.
I saw Alan on Easter Monday near his Kenworth K200 at a roadhouse parking area, deep in the north Queensland tropics.
Aged 65, Alan has been a truckie for 45 years, and these days works for Tutts Transport, based in Brisbane.
“I have brought up steel from Brisbane for Townsville and will be going back empty. I have been with this company for six months and they are great,” Alan said.
He added that he generally likes stopping at BP roadhouses and nominated the one at Port Augusta in SA as ticking all the boxes.
“The staff are friendly and the food excellent. But I also like the Shell at Aratula in Queensland,” he said.
This experienced driver nominated the Bruce Highway as the worst to negotiate.
“The Rockhampton to Townsville section is very bad especially in certain spots,” Alan said.
As for his favourite sport, Alan who was born in New Zealand, was quick to opt for rugby union, having played ‘rah-rah’ as a young man.
“I follow the New Zealand All Blacks and I left over there for Australia in 1979 and have driven trucks in total for 45 years,” he said.
When he was based at Kalgoorlie in WA, Alan drove for West Brothers in the eighties.
“I drove Scanias and then after that was with Wesfarmers in WA for 10 years and got behind the wheel of Kenworths, Whites and Volvos,” he said.
So how does the Kenworth he currently drives compare with the others? “It is good,” he said.
