Victoria secures 30 per cent of federal infrastructure budget

The Federal Government has allocated a significant share of infrastructure spend to Victoria.

On Tuesday, Treasurer Jim Chalmers delivered the news and outlined the details of the funding in a $120 billion pipeline, spanning over the course of ten years.

The allocations of the spend prioritise upgrading roads, bridges, and public transport networks to alleviate congestion, improve safety, and facilitate smoother movement of goods and people.

Victorian Transport Association (VTA) CEO, Peter Anderson, has commented on the benefits and potential the spend will have particularly for the North East Link project which is currently in its final stages of assembling two of the biggest boring machines in the southern hemisphere.

“Significant funding has been provided to the North East Link with $3.3 billion allocated to this transformative project,” he said.

“We applaud federal commitment to enhancing connectivity and unlocking economic potential – by seamlessly linking the Eastern Freeway to the M80 Ring Road, this project will significantly reduce travel times, enhance freight efficiency, and alleviate pressure on existing arterial route.”

Anderson said it will also ultimately help achieve infrastructure objectives on a national level and applauded the Federal Government for its commitment to investing in Victorian infrastructure.

“In alignment with broader national objectives, the Victorian infrastructure spending allocations also prioritise initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth, creating job opportunities, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents,” he said.

“Overall, the federal budget underscores a commitment to investing in Victorian infrastructure to support the state’s long-term development, competitiveness and prosperity.”

In other news, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has launched an operation running from the Western Australia border to Port Augusta in South Australia to remind heavy vehicle drivers to stay alert behind the wheel.
