Vintage rigs roll out for Heyfield rally

Organisers of the Heyfield Vintage Machinery Rally say last weekend’s event was a great success, with strong attendance and a record number of displays at the Heyfield Oval in eastern Victoria.

Secretary/treasurer of the organising committee, Barb Cook, told Big Rigs that she is delighted with how it all went.

“We’ve been getting really positive feedback, with people saying that there was a great family atmosphere and it was an affordable event to attend,” she said.

“We’ve kept tickets at $10 for years because we want people to be able to come.”

Cook said there was something for everyone at the show, which took place across May 18 and 19 – from vintage trucks to steam engines.

One of our members restored a Blitz [army truck] and brought it along,” she said. “He only just finished the canvas on that last week.

“Our compounds were full with steam and stationery engines, and we had two beautiful old Clydesdales doing working horse displays.

“We had a tractor pull, we had a blacksmith, motorbikes, cars, stall holders, we had a shed full of memorabilia. It was fantastic.”

Cook estimates there were 25 trucks and over 100 tractors on display, with 240 people packing into the shed for a meal on Saturday.

“We had people come from Tassie, from NSW, SA, every corner of Victoria,” she added.

Cook, who has been involved in the Heyfield Vintage Machinery Club for over 20 years, said the show is all about celebrating the history of transport while providing entertainment for young and old.

“We had people coming up to us, thanking us for bringing everything to life,” she said.

“There’s a nostalgia to it all, like people recognising trucks and tractors their grandparents might have had on the farm when they were growing up.

“We’re preserving Australian heritage, that’s our motto.”
