Work starts on permanent toilets for truckies at Gatton

Work is set to begin later this week on the eagerly-awaited site for permanent toilets for truckies at the Gatton hook-ups in Queensland.

Tenacious truckies’ campaigner Wes Walker said he’d had the start date confirmed by the contractor tasked by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to install the block consisting of three cubicles, but no showers.

TMR couldn’t comment because it’s now in ‘caretaker’ mode due to the state election on October 26.

But Walker said it should only be a further week until the new prefabricated facilities are ready for truckies to use.

Truckies have had two portaloos on site since Walker’s long fight for basic facilities paid off with their arrival in August 2022.

The state government said the toilets weren’t on the original plans for the costly decoupling facility due to biosecurity concerns around the University of Queensland’s adjoining agriculture fields. The university, however, told Big Rigs it was TMR’s decision not to build them.

It was only Walker’s long crusade, which also caught the attention of A Current Affair, the Daily Mail, and Senator Glenn Sterle, that sparked a change of heart.

Walker said he was thrilled to hear that all his hard work had paid off with the result that truckies deserved, but he won’t be resting on his laurels.

“It’s a small move forward but this won’t be the last you hear from me,” said Walker, who is already lining up his next campaign site.
